If there’s one lesson we’ve learned from traveling with an RV, it’s that your trip only goes as far as your tires let you. We’ve had our share of early-morning departure checks, roadside shoulder stops, and campground arrivals were a low tire suddenly turns into the main event. After relying on gas station compressors (when we can actually find one that reaches RV pressures and isn’t half broken), we finally decided we needed a dedicated solution in our own rig.
That’s what led us to the VIAIR 400P-RV (model 40047) portable air compressor-a 12V, heavy-duty inflator that promises up to 150 PSI, RV-specific fittings, and the power to handle Class C tires without breaking a sweat. On paper, it sounds like everything we’ve always wanted in a portable unit: clamps straight to the battery, comes in its own carrying case, includes a gas-station-style inflation gun with both 45-degree and 90-degree chucks, and packs enough hose to reach all the way around a full-size motorhome.
We’ve been using the 400P-RV on our own rig and towed vehicle, and also on bikes and spare tires, to see if it actually lives up to VIAIR’s reputation-and whether it justifies the space it takes up in our storage bay. In this review, we’ll walk through our real-world experiance with setup, performance, ease of use, and portability, and share where this compressor shines and where it might fall short, so we can decide together whether it deserves a permanent spot in your RV toolkit.
Achieve New Heights

As we wrapped up our testing of the VIAIR 400P-RV,what stood out most was how quickly it went from “just another gadget in the storage bay” to a tool we actually rely on. the combination of RV-specific fittings, long reach, and true high-pressure capability means we can top off our tires without hunting down a truck stop or hoping the gas station compressor isn’t broken-again.
It’s not the cheapest option out there, and it’s definitely more than a glovebox emergency inflator. But for those of us hauling our homes on wheels, the peace of mind of having a dedicated, purpose-built RV compressor on board is hard to put a price on. We’d rather spend a few extra minutes clipping onto the battery in the campsite than deal with a low tire miles from anywhere.
If you’re looking for a portable, heavy-duty compressor that can genuinely handle Class C RV tires and still be compact enough to stash in a storage compartment, the VIAIR 400P-RV has earned its spot in our rig.
